Bisoprolol and Symbicort (which contains formoterol and budesonide) work against each other. Bisoprolol may make the Symbicort less effective at opening your airways, which could lead to breathing difficulties or an asthma attack. Additionally, Symbicort can sometimes cause a drop in potassium levels or an irregular heartbeat, which may be complicated by taking a beta-blocker like bisoprolol.

Why this happens
Bisoprolol is a 'beta-blocker' and formoterol (in Symbicort) is a 'beta-agonist'. They target the same receptors in the body but have opposite effects: one narrows the airways while the other tries to widen them. This 'antagonism' means they can cancel each other out.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou must speak to your doctor before taking these together. If you have asthma, beta-blockers like bisoprolol are usually avoided. If your doctor has prescribed both, it is because they feel the benefit outweighs the risk, but you must be closely monitored. Seek medical help immediately if you find it harder to breathe or if you experience sudden wheezing.

Treatment and medication
Can I take Sertraline and Fluoxetine together?
Taking sertraline and fluoxetine together significantly increases the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. This happens because both medicines work by increasing the level of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. If levels get too high, it can cause symptoms like shivering, diarrhoea, confusion, severe muscle tightness, fever, and even seizures. Additionally, fluoxetine can slow down how your body breaks down sertraline, leading to a build-up of the drug in your system and increasing the risk of side effects.

Treatment and medication
Can I take Levothyroxine and Prednisolone together?
Taking prednisolone may change how much levothyroxine your body needs. You might find that your thyroid levels fluctuate, potentially leading to symptoms of an overactive or underactive thyroid while you are on the steroid treatment.
