Can I take 50 and Magnesium together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking magnesium at the same time as 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) may increase the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, or an upset stomach. While they are often taken together in sleep or mood supplements, the combination can have an additive effect on your central nervous system.

Why this happens

Both magnesium and 5-HTP can have a calming or sedative effect on the brain. Magnesium helps regulate neurotransmitters, while 5-HTP is converted directly into serotonin. Taking them together may enhance these relaxing effects, potentially leading to increased sleepiness. Additionally, both substances can affect the digestive system, which may lead to nausea or diarrhoea in some people.

It is best to start with a low dose of each to see how your body reacts. If you feel excessively drowsy or develop an upset stomach, try taking them at different times of the day. Always consult with a pharmacist or GP before starting new supplements, especially if you are already taking prescribed medication for mood or sleep.
