Taking 5-HTP and pravastatin together may increase the risk of a rare but serious muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis. This can cause severe muscle pain, weakness, and in rare cases, kidney damage.

Why this happens
Both substances can influence muscle metabolism. While pravastatin is known to occasionally cause muscle side effects, 5-HTP can increase serotonin levels. In some cases, high serotonin levels or the way these supplements interact with metabolic pathways can worsen the muscle-related side effects of statins.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should speak to your doctor before taking 5-HTP with pravastatin. If you are already taking both, watch out for any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have a fever or feel generally unwell. If you notice these symptoms, stop taking the supplements and contact your doctor immediately.
