Can I take 50 and Sumatriptan together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking 5-HTP and sumatriptan together can lead to a rare but very serious condition called 'serotonin syndrome'. This happens when there is too much of a chemical called serotonin in your brain and body. Symptoms can include shivering, sweating, a very fast heartbeat, muscle stiffness, twitching, and feeling very agitated or confused.

Why this happens

Both 5-HTP and sumatriptan increase the activity of serotonin. 5-HTP is a building block that the body uses to make more serotonin, while sumatriptan directly stimulates serotonin receptors to treat migraines. Using them at the same time can cause serotonin levels to rise to dangerous levels.

You should not take 5-HTP and sumatriptan together without speaking to your doctor first. If you are already taking both and feel unwell, seek medical help immediately. Your doctor may suggest an alternative treatment for your migraines or advise you to stop taking the 5-HTP supplement.
