Taking 5-HTP and ashwagandha together may make you feel very sleepy, drowsy, or uncoordinated. There is also a small but serious risk of a condition called 'serotonin syndrome', which happens when serotonin levels in the brain become too high. Symptoms can include shivering, sweating, a fast heartbeat, agitation, or muscle twitching.

Why this happens
Both supplements affect the brain and nervous system. 5-HTP increases the production of serotonin (a chemical messenger). Ashwagandha has 'GABA-ergic' effects, meaning it calms the nervous system, and it may also slightly increase serotonin levels. When used together, their sedative effects can add up (an additive effect), and their combined impact on serotonin could potentially lead to an unsafe buildup.
What you should do

If you do take both, start with the lowest possible doses and do not drive or operate machinery until you are certain you do not feel overly drowsy. Seek medical help immediately if you experience confusion, a very fast heartbeat, or severe muscle stiffness.
