Taking iron supplements (ferrous sulphate, ferrous fumarate, or ferrous gluconate) at the same time as certain medications can stop the other medicine from being absorbed into your bloodstream. This means the other medicine may not work properly.

Why this happens

Iron is a metal that can 'bind' to other drugs in the stomach or gut, forming a large complex that the body cannot absorb. This is known as chelation.

To avoid this, you should space the doses apart. Usually, it is recommended to take the iron supplement at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking other medications. Check with your pharmacist for the specific timing required for your other medicines.
