There is no known interaction between Orlistat (Xenical) and Vitamin D3. However, Orlistat works by blocking the absorption of fat from your diet, and because Vitamin D is a 'fat-soluble' vitamin, Orlistat can prevent your body from absorbing it properly. This can lead to low Vitamin D levels over time.

Why this happens
Orlistat attaches to the enzymes in your gut that break down fat. Since Vitamin D needs to be dissolved in fat to be absorbed into your bloodstream, blocking fat absorption also blocks the uptake of the vitamin.
What you should do
Back to contentsTo ensure you get enough Vitamin D, you should take your Vitamin D supplement at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking Orlistat (for example, at bedtime). It is also best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking any medication to ensure your body processes the treatment effectively.
