Taking zopiclone and zolpidem together can cause extreme sleepiness, severe confusion, and a high risk of falling. It can also lead to dangerous breathing problems (respiratory depression) and a state of 'excessive sedation' where you may be difficult to wake up. There is also an increased risk of complex sleep behaviours, such as sleep-walking or sleep-driving, which can be very dangerous.

Why this happens
Both zopiclone and zolpidem belong to a group of medicines called 'Z-drugs'. They work in the same way by slowing down activity in the brain to help you sleep. Taking both at once creates an 'additive effect', meaning the sedative impact is doubled, which can overwhelm the central nervous system.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should not take these two medicines together. They are both intended to treat the same condition (insomnia), and taking both increases the risk of overdose and serious side effects. If you find that one is not working for you, speak to your doctor about adjusting your treatment rather than combining them. Do not drive or operate machinery if you have taken both.
