Taking magnesium at the same time as aspirin (75mg) can make the aspirin less effective. Magnesium can act as an antacid, which may change how quickly the aspirin is absorbed or how much of it gets into your bloodstream. This is particularly important if you are taking 'baby' aspirin (75mg) to prevent heart attacks or strokes, as you need the full dose to work correctly.

Why this happens
Magnesium compounds can increase the pH level in the stomach or bind to the aspirin, which interferes with how the medicine is absorbed into the body. It can also cause the kidneys to remove aspirin from the system more quickly.
What you should do
Back to contentsTo make sure your aspirin works properly, do not take your magnesium supplement at the same time. You should leave a gap of at least 2 to 3 hours between taking your aspirin and taking your magnesium supplement. If you have been prescribed aspirin for a heart condition, speak to your pharmacist or doctor before starting any new supplements.
