Taking alcohol with bisoprolol can cause your blood pressure to drop too low. This can make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, faint, or very sleepy. Alcohol can also interfere with how well bisoprolol works to manage your heart rate or blood pressure.

Why this happens

Both alcohol and bisoprolol work to lower blood pressure (vasodilation). When used together, their effects add up, leading to an excessive drop in blood pressure. Alcohol can also cause your heart rate to become irregular, which opposes the stabilising effect of bisoprolol.

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking bisoprolol. If you do choose to drink, do so very cautiously and in small amounts. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy or drowsy. If you feel faint, sit or lie down immediately.
