Taking bupropion with Abilify (aripiprazole) can significantly increase the levels of Abilify in your blood. This makes you much more likely to experience side effects such as restlessness, uncontrollable muscle movements (tremors or twitching), extreme sleepiness, and dizziness. There is also a slightly higher risk of having a seizure when these two medicines are used together.

Why this happens
Your liver uses a specific enzyme (called CYP2D6) to break down Abilify and remove it from your body. Bupropion blocks this enzyme. Because the 'cleanup crew' in your liver is blocked, Abilify builds up to much higher levels than intended.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou must speak to your doctor before taking these together. If your doctor decides you need both, they will usually need to reduce your dose of Abilify (often by half). Contact your doctor immediately if you notice unusual muscle movements, severe drowsiness, or feel very restless. Do not stop taking either medication without medical advice.
