Taking Abilify (aripiprazole) and clonidine together can make you feel very sleepy, dizzy, or lightheaded. It may also cause a significant drop in your blood pressure, especially when you stand up quickly from a sitting or lying position. This can increase your risk of falling or fainting.

Why this happens
Both medicines have a 'depressing' effect on the central nervous system and both can lower blood pressure. When used together, these effects are added together (additive effect), making the side effects much stronger than if you took either medicine alone.
What you should do
Back to contentsUse caution when taking these medicines together. It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol, as it will make the sleepiness and dizziness much worse. When getting out of bed or standing up, do so slowly to give your body time to adjust and prevent fainting. Do not drive or operate machinery until you are certain you are not too drowsy to do so safely. If you feel very dizzy, confused, or unusually weak, contact your doctor.

Taking fluoxetine with Abilify (aripiprazole) can significantly increase the amount of Abilify in your bloodstream. This makes you much more likely to experience side effects such as extreme sleepiness, restlessness (feeling like you cannot sit still), uncontrollable body movements (tremors or twitching), and dizziness. There is also a small but serious risk of a heart rhythm problem called QT prolongation.
