Abiraterone must be taken on an empty stomach. Taking it with any food—including the food required for some 'prolonged release' medications to work properly—can cause your body to absorb too much of the drug. This can lead to dangerous side effects.

Why this happens
Abiraterone is highly sensitive to food. If there is any fat or food in your system, the amount of medicine absorbed into your blood can increase by up to 10 times the intended dose. This can cause severe issues with your liver, heart, or potassium levels.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou must take abiraterone at least one hour before eating or two hours after eating. If your 'prolonged release' medication requires food, you must carefully time your doses so that the abiraterone is always taken on a completely empty stomach. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist to create a safe dosing schedule.
