Can I take Accrete d3 and Lipitor together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking Accrete D3 (calcium and vitamin D3) alongside Lipitor (atorvastatin) may slightly reduce the amount of the statin medication that reaches your bloodstream. This could potentially make the Lipitor slightly less effective at lowering your cholesterol. Additionally, high doses of Vitamin D can occasionally lead to high calcium levels, which may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects sometimes associated with statins.

Why this happens

Calcium carbonate (in Accrete D3) can interfere with how the body absorbs atorvastatin (Lipitor) in the digestive tract. Furthermore, Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium; if calcium levels become too high (hypercalcaemia), it can theoretically worsen statin-induced muscle toxicity (myopathy), though this is rare at standard doses.

You can usually take these medicines together, but it is best to space them out. Try to take your Accrete D3 at least 2 hours apart from your Lipitor to ensure your cholesterol medicine is absorbed properly. If you experience any unusual muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, contact your doctor. Your doctor may monitor your cholesterol levels to ensure the Lipitor is still working effectively.

Muscle problems (Myopathy/Rhabdomyolysis)

You must report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor immediately. This is especially important if you also feel unwell or have a fever, as it can be a sign of a rare but serious muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney damage.

Pregnancy

Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It can cause serious harm to an unborn baby. You must use effective contraception while taking it.

Kidney Stones (Nephrolithiasis)

Avoid this medicine if you have a history of kidney stones or severe kidney disease, as the high calcium content can increase the risk of forming new stones or worsening kidney function.
