Why this happens

Acetazolamide is a diuretic (water tablet) that works by changing how your kidneys handle certain substances. It can increase the excretion of folate (folic acid) out of the body.

You can usually take these together, but you should inform your doctor if you are taking acetazolamide long-term. They may want to monitor your folic acid levels or suggest a supplement if your levels become low. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, it is especially important to discuss this with your doctor as folic acid is vital for the baby's development.
