Drug interaction guide

Taking perindopril and amlodipine together can cause your blood pressure to drop lower than if you took either medicine alone. Why this happens

Both medicines work to lower blood pressure but in different ways. Perindopril (an ACE inhibitor) relaxes blood vessels by blocking a specific enzyme, while amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker) relaxes the muscles in the walls of your arteries. Because they both target the circulatory system, their effects add together.

This is a very common and effective combination used to treat high blood pressure, and many people take them together in a single 'combination' pill. However, you should have your blood pressure and kidney function monitored regularly by your doctor. To avoid dizziness, try to get up slowly from a sitting or lying position. If you feel very dizzy, have a persistent dry cough, or notice swelling in your ankles, speak to your GP.
