Can I take Amitriptyline and Mirtazapine together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking these two medicines together can make you feel very sleepy, dizzy, and confused. It may also increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome, which can cause shivering, sweating, and a fast heartbeat. Additionally, both drugs can affect your heart rhythm and increase the risk of 'anticholinergic' side effects like a very dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation.

Why this happens

Both drugs work by increasing certain chemicals in the brain (serotonin and norepinephrine) and both have strong sedative effects. Because they both act on similar pathways, their effects add together (an additive effect), making side effects much more likely and intense.

You should only take these two medicines together if they have been specifically prescribed by a specialist who is monitoring you closely. If you feel extremely drowsy, faint, or notice a very fast or irregular heartbeat, seek medical advice immediately. Avoid driving or using machinery until you know how this combination affects you.
