Can I take Amitriptyline and Omeprazole together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking omeprazole alongside amitriptyline can increase the levels of amitriptyline in your bloodstream. This may make you more likely to experience side effects such as extreme sleepiness, a dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, or feeling dizzy. In some cases, it could also affect your heart rhythm.

Why this happens

Amitriptyline is broken down (metabolised) in the liver by specific proteins called enzymes. Omeprazole can slow down the activity of these enzymes, which means the amitriptyline stays in your system longer and reaches higher levels than intended.

You can take these medicines together, but you should be aware of increased side effects. If you feel unusually drowsy, confused, or notice a fast or irregular heartbeat, contact your doctor. Your doctor may choose to lower your dose of amitriptyline if you need to take omeprazole for a long time.
