Can I take Amitriptyline and Tadalafil together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking amitriptyline and tadalafil together can cause your blood pressure to drop lower than usual. This may make you feel dizzy, light-headed, or faint, especially when you stand up quickly from a sitting or lying position. There is also a very small risk of an increased heart rate.

Why this happens

Both medications can lower blood pressure in different ways. Amitriptyline (a tricyclic antidepressant) can cause 'orthostatic hypotension' (a drop in blood pressure when standing), while tadalafil (used for erectile dysfunction) relaxes the blood vessels. When used together, these effects can add up, leading to a more significant drop in blood pressure.

Use this combination with caution. When moving from a lying or sitting position, stand up slowly to allow your body to adjust. If you feel dizzy or faint, sit or lie down immediately. If these symptoms are frequent or severe, speak to your doctor, as they may need to adjust your dosage. Avoid drinking alcohol, as this can make the dizziness worse.
