Taking turmeric (specifically the active ingredient curcumin) alongside amitriptyline may increase the levels of the medication in your bloodstream. This could lead to an increased risk of side effects such as extreme drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, or a fast heartbeat. Turmeric may also have a mild blood-thinning effect, which could theoretically increase the risk of bruising when taken with certain antidepressants.

Why this happens
Amitriptyline is broken down in the liver by specific enzymes (primarily CYP2D6 and CYP3A4). Curcumin, found in turmeric, can inhibit these enzymes. When these enzymes are blocked, the body cannot clear amitriptyline as quickly as usual, leading to higher levels of the drug in the system.
