Taking amlodipine and Lipitor (atorvastatin) together can increase the amount of Lipitor in your bloodstream. This may increase the risk of side effects, particularly muscle pain or weakness.

Why this happens
Both drugs are processed by the same enzyme in the liver (CYP3A4). Amlodipine can slow down the breakdown of Lipitor, leading to higher levels of the statin in your body.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is common and often necessary to take these two medicines together, but your doctor may choose to limit your dose of Lipitor (usually to no more than 20mg or 40mg depending on local guidelines) to keep you safe. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, contact your doctor.
