Can I take Ashwagandha and Magnesium glycinate together?

Taking ashwagandha and magnesium glycinate together is generally safe, but they may have an additive effect that makes you feel very relaxed or sleepy. Ashwagandha is an 'adaptogen' used to reduce stress, and magnesium glycinate is a highly absorbable form of magnesium often used to support sleep and relaxation. Combining them may increase these calming effects.

Why this happens

Both substances can influence the central nervous system. Ashwagandha may increase the activity of GABA (a chemical in the brain that promotes calmness), while magnesium also supports GABA function and acts as a mild muscle relaxant. There are no known significant issues with how the body absorbs or breaks down these two supplements when taken together.

It is usually fine to take these together. However, because both can cause drowsiness, it is best to take them in the evening or before bed. Start with the lowest recommended dose of each to see how your body reacts. If you feel excessively tired the next day, you may wish to separate the doses or reduce the amount you are taking. Always consult your GP before starting new supplements, especially if you take medication for anxiety, sleep, or blood pressure.
