Can I take .aspirin and Alginate together?

Taking alginates (like Gaviscon) at the same time as aspirin can make the aspirin less effective. This is because the alginate can coat the stomach or change the acidity, which prevents the aspirin from being absorbed into your bloodstream properly.

Why this happens

Alginates work by forming a protective 'raft' or barrier in the stomach and can alter the pH levels. This physical barrier and change in acidity can trap the aspirin or slow down its dissolution, meaning less of the medicine gets into your system to work.

To make sure your aspirin works correctly, you should space these medicines out. Take your aspirin at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking an alginate. If you are taking low-dose aspirin to prevent heart attacks or strokes, it is especially important to ensure it is absorbed fully.
