Why this happens

These drugs are processed by different pathways in the body. Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant mainly broken down by an enzyme called thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT), while montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist processed primarily by the liver's cytochrome P450 system. They do not interfere with each other's absorption, metabolism, or excretion.

You can take both medicines as prescribed by your doctor. However, as with any combination of treatments, you should monitor for any new or unusual side effects and report them to your GP or pharmacist. Always ensure your doctor is aware of all the medications you are taking.
