There is no direct harmful interaction between Vitamin D3 and Synthroid (levothyroxine). In fact, many people take them together because Vitamin D deficiency is common in people with thyroid conditions. However, the timing of when you take them is important to ensure your thyroid medication works correctly.

Why this happens
Vitamin D3 supplements do not typically interfere with how the body processes levothyroxine. However, some Vitamin D supplements also contain calcium. Calcium is known to bind to levothyroxine in the gut, which prevents the thyroid medicine from being absorbed into your bloodstream.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou can safely take both, but it is best to separate them. Take your Synthroid on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Wait at least 4 hours after taking your Synthroid before taking any supplement that contains calcium or high doses of Vitamin D to ensure your thyroid levels stay stable.
