Why this happens

Dapagliflozin works by helping your kidneys remove excess sugar through your urine. Gliclazide works by stimulating your pancreas to produce more insulin. When used together, the 'additive effect' of both drugs lowering your blood sugar simultaneously makes a low blood sugar episode more likely.

You should monitor your blood sugar levels more frequently when starting this combination or when your dose is changed. Make sure you know how to recognise the signs of a 'hypo' (such as sweating, shaking, hunger, or irritability) and always carry a fast-acting glucose source (like glucose tablets or sugary sweets). Your doctor may need to reduce your dose of gliclazide to prevent your blood sugar from dropping too low.
