Why this happens
Iron can bind to certain medications in the digestive tract, forming a complex that is too large for the body to absorb properly. This reduces the concentration of the medicine in your bloodstream.
What you should do
Back to contentsTo avoid this interaction, it is best to separate the doses. Take your venlafaxine at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking your iron supplement. If you notice your mood worsening or your anxiety increasing, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Important precautions
Back to contentsAccidental overdose in children
Iron supplements are a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children. You must store this medicine in a secure place out of the reach and sight of children.
High blood pressure (Hypertension)
Venlafaxine can significantly increase your blood pressure. Your doctor must check your blood pressure before you start treatment and monitor it regularly while you are taking this medicine.
Bleeding disorders
Venlafaxine increases your risk of serious bleeding, especially if you are also taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or blood-thinning medications like warfarin.
Serotonin syndrome
Do not take venlafaxine with St John’s Wort or other antidepressants. Combining them can cause a life-threatening reaction called serotonin syndrome, involving high fever, agitation, and muscle stiffness.
Discontinuation syndrome
Do not stop taking venlafaxine suddenly. Doing so can cause severe withdrawal symptoms like 'brain zaps' (electric shock sensations), extreme dizziness, and tremors. Your dose must be reduced gradually.
Food and drink warnings
Back to contentsAlcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking venlafaxine. Combining alcohol with this medicine can increase drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion. It may also worsen the symptoms of depression or anxiety that the medicine is treating.
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking iron supplements. Chronic alcohol consumption can interfere with how iron is stored and processed in the liver, potentially increasing the risk of iron toxicity or liver strain.
Tea, Coffee, and Caffeine
Caffeine and tannins found in tea and coffee significantly reduce the amount of iron your body absorbs. You should avoid drinking these for at least 2 hours before or after taking your iron supplement.
Dairy products (Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt)
Calcium in dairy products prevents iron from being absorbed properly. Avoid consuming dairy for at least 2 hours before or after your dose.
Eggs and Whole Grains
Compounds in eggs (phosphoprotein) and whole grains (phytates) can interfere with iron absorption. It is best to take iron on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
Vitamin C (Orange Juice)
Taking your iron supplement with a glass of orange juice or foods rich in Vitamin C is beneficial, as it helps your body absorb the iron more effectively.
