There is no known interaction between ibuprofen and amlodipine that would make them dangerous to take together, but ibuprofen can sometimes make blood pressure medications like amlodipine slightly less effective. Ibuprofen can also increase the risk of kidney strain when taken with blood pressure tablets.

Why this happens
Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines called NSAIDs. These can cause the body to hold onto salt and water, which raises blood pressure. This works against amlodipine, which is trying to lower your blood pressure. Additionally, both drugs can affect how blood flows through the kidneys.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is generally safe to take these together for a short time (a few days). However, if you need to take ibuprofen regularly, you should tell your doctor. They may want to check your blood pressure or perform a simple blood test to check your kidney function. If you notice any swelling in your ankles or a rise in your blood pressure readings, speak to your GP.
