Why this happens
Morphine slows down the movement of the digestive system (gastric emptying). This can delay how quickly Lixiana enters your bloodstream. Additionally, strong painkillers like morphine can sometimes mask the pain of internal bleeding or, in some cases, increase the risk of stomach irritation which may lead to bleeding when combined with a blood thinner.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou can take these medicines together, but you should be extra vigilant. Watch for signs of unusual bleeding, such as bruising easily, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or dark, tarry stools. If you are prescribed morphine for long-term use, discuss this with your doctor to ensure your dose of Lixiana is still providing the right level of protection. Always take your Lixiana exactly as prescribed.

Important precautions
Back to contentsRespiratory depression and sedation
Morphine can dangerously slow your breathing and cause extreme sleepiness. This risk is significantly increased if you drink alcohol or take other sedating medicines like benzodiazepines.
Drug dependence and addiction
Morphine is an opioid that carries a high risk of addiction and dependence, even at prescribed doses. Do not increase your dose without medical advice, and do not stop taking it suddenly.
Bleeding risk
Lixiana increases your risk of serious bleeding. Seek immediate medical help if you have a fall or head injury, or if you notice signs of internal bleeding such as black tarry stools, blood in your urine, or coughing up blood.
Surgery or dental procedures
You must tell your doctor or dentist you are taking Lixiana before any procedure, as you may need to stop taking it temporarily to prevent dangerous bleeding.
Food and drink warnings
Back to contentsAlcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking morphine. Combining alcohol with morphine significantly increases the risk of dangerous side effects, such as extreme sleepiness, breathing difficulties, and a potentially fatal overdose.
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking Lixiana. Alcohol can increase the risk of bleeding in your stomach and intestines. Additionally, heavy drinking can affect how your liver functions, which may interfere with how your body processes this medication.
Grapefruit juice
Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice. It can increase the levels of morphine in your blood, making side effects like drowsiness or breathing problems more likely.

Treatment and medication
Can I take Losartan and Turmeric together?
Taking turmeric with losartan may cause your blood pressure to drop lower than intended. It might also increase the amount of losartan that stays in your bloodstream, potentially increasing the risk of side effects like dizziness or kidney strain.

Treatment and medication
Can I take Lisinopril and Potassium together?
Taking lisinopril and potassium supplements together can cause the levels of potassium in your blood to become dangerously high (a condition called hyperkalaemia). While your body needs potassium for your heart and muscles to work, too much of it can lead to serious heart rhythm problems or even cause the heart to stop. Symptoms of high potassium can include muscle weakness, tingling sensations, or palpitations, but often there are no symptoms until the level is very high.
