Why this happens

Morphine slows down the movement of the digestive system (gastric emptying). This can delay how quickly Lixiana enters your bloodstream. Additionally, strong painkillers like morphine can sometimes mask the pain of internal bleeding or, in some cases, increase the risk of stomach irritation which may lead to bleeding when combined with a blood thinner.

What you should do

You can take these medicines together, but you should be extra vigilant. Watch for signs of unusual bleeding, such as bruising easily, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or dark, tarry stools. If you are prescribed morphine for long-term use, discuss this with your doctor to ensure your dose of Lixiana is still providing the right level of protection. Always take your Lixiana exactly as prescribed.
