Taking magnesium supplements alongside dapagliflozin may increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure. Both substances can have a mild diuretic effect (making you pass more urine). Additionally, magnesium may slightly interfere with how much dapagliflozin your body absorbs if taken at the exact same time.

Why this happens
Dapagliflozin works by removing glucose and water through the kidneys. Magnesium can also act as an osmotic laxative or diuretic. Together, they may increase fluid loss. There is also a potential for magnesium to bind with certain medications in the digestive tract, potentially reducing their absorption.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is generally safe to take both, but you should stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water. To ensure the best absorption of your medication, try to space them out by at least 2 hours. Monitor yourself for signs of dehydration or dizziness when standing up. If you feel very lightheaded, speak to your doctor.
