Taking curcumin (turmeric) while on abiraterone may change the amount of the medicine in your blood. This could either make the abiraterone less effective at treating your condition or increase the risk of side effects.

Why this happens
Abiraterone is broken down in the liver by specific proteins (enzymes). Curcumin can interfere with these proteins, which changes how quickly your body processes the medicine. Curcumin may also interfere with 'transporter' proteins that help move the drug into your cells.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should avoid taking curcumin or high-dose turmeric supplements while taking abiraterone. If you are already taking them, speak to your doctor or specialist before stopping or changing your dose, as they may need to monitor your treatment more closely. It is generally fine to use small amounts of turmeric as a spice in cooking.
