Can I take Acalabrutinib and Menthol together?

Drug interaction guide

There is no known direct interaction between acalabrutinib and menthol. However, acalabrutinib can sometimes cause side effects like a sore throat or mouth ulcers, which menthol products (like lozenges) are often used to treat. While menthol itself is fine, you should ensure that any menthol product you use does not contain other active ingredients that could interfere with your treatment.

Why this happens

Acalabrutinib is primarily broken down by a specific liver enzyme (CYP3A4). Menthol does not significantly affect this enzyme or the way acalabrutinib works in the body.

It is fine to use menthol products (such as cough sweets or topical rubs) while taking acalabrutinib. However, always check the label of any over-the-counter remedy to ensure it does not contain aspirin or ibuprofen, as these can increase the risk of bleeding when taken with acalabrutinib. If you are using menthol to treat a persistent cough or sore throat, inform your medical team, as these can be signs of an infection.
