Why this happens

Ciprofloxacin belongs to a group of antibiotics called quinolones. These medicines can interfere with how your body manages insulin and glucose, which can enhance the blood-sugar-lowering effects of diabetes medicines like acarbose.

You should monitor your blood sugar levels more frequently while taking ciprofloxacin. If you experience symptoms of low blood sugar, treat it immediately with glucose (such as glucose tablets or a sugary drink). Note that because acarbose slows down the digestion of table sugar, you MUST use pure glucose (dextrose) to treat a 'hypo' while on this medication. Inform your doctor if you notice significant changes in your blood sugar readings.
