Why this happens

Both aciclovir and ibrutinib are processed and removed from the body by the same transport system in the kidneys (specifically a protein called MATE1). Because they are 'competing' for the same exit route, ibrutinib can slow down the removal of aciclovir, leading to higher levels of the antiviral medicine in your system.

You can usually take these medicines together, but you should be monitored for side effects. It is important to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water to help protect your kidneys. If you notice any changes in how much you urinate, or if you experience unusual tiredness or skin rashes, contact your doctor. Your doctor may decide to adjust your aciclovir dose if you have existing kidney problems.
