Taking magnesium supplements alongside Adderall (amphetamine salts) can increase the amount of the medication absorbed into your bloodstream and slow down how quickly your body gets rid of it. This may lead to stronger effects or increased side effects from the Adderall, such as a racing heart, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping.

Why this happens
Adderall is sensitive to the pH levels (acidity) of your digestive tract and urine. Magnesium (especially in forms like magnesium oxide or hydroxide) acts as an antacid, making the environment less acidic. This allows more of the medication to be absorbed in the gut and prevents the kidneys from flushing it out as quickly as usual.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is generally best to separate the doses. Try to take your magnesium supplement at least 2 to 3 hours before or after your Adderall dose. If you notice you feel unusually 'wired' or have a racing heart when taking both, speak to your doctor about adjusting your dose or the timing.
