Can I take Amiodarone and Bisoprolol together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking these two medicines together can cause your heart rate to become too slow (bradycardia) or lead to an irregular heartbeat. You may feel dizzy, lightheaded, extremely tired, or like you might faint. In some cases, it can also affect how well your heart pumps blood around your body.

Why this happens

Both amiodarone and bisoprolol work by slowing down the electrical signals in your heart and reducing your heart rate. When used together, their effects add up (a 'synergistic' effect), which can slow the heart down much more than intended. Amiodarone can also slightly increase the levels of bisoprolol in your blood by slowing down how your body breaks it down.

You must speak to your doctor before taking these together. If your doctor has prescribed both, they will need to monitor your heart rate and blood pressure very closely, often starting with an ECG (heart trace). Seek medical help immediately if you feel dizzy, faint, or short of breath, or if you notice your pulse feels unusually slow.
