Taking amlodipine with certain statins (especially simvastatin or atorvastatin) can increase the level of the statin in your blood. This increases the risk of side effects, particularly muscle aches, pains, or weakness (a condition called myopathy). In rare cases, this can lead to a serious muscle breakdown problem called rhabdomyolysis, which can damage the kidneys.

Why this happens
Amlodipine and many statins are broken down in the body by the same liver enzyme (called CYP3A4). Because amlodipine slows down this enzyme, the statin stays in your system longer and reaches higher levels than intended.
What you should do
Back to contentsIf you are taking simvastatin, your doctor should limit your dose to a maximum of 20mg daily while you are on amlodipine. For other statins like atorvastatin, your doctor may monitor you more closely. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, contact your doctor immediately. Do not stop taking your medication without medical advice.
