Can I take Atorvastatin and Maitake together?

Taking maitake mushrooms alongside atorvastatin may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects or liver irritation. It may also cause your blood sugar or cholesterol levels to drop lower than expected.

Why this happens

Maitake contains compounds that may interfere with the liver enzymes (CYP3A4) responsible for breaking down atorvastatin, potentially leading to higher levels of the medicine in your blood. Additionally, both substances can lower blood sugar and cholesterol, which may lead to an additive effect.

What you should do

Speak to your doctor before combining these two. If you decide to take both, monitor yourself closely for unusual muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, as well as signs of low blood sugar (such as dizziness or shaking).
