Why this happens

Magnesium can bind to other substances in the digestive tract, which may reduce the amount of 5-HTP that enters the bloodstream. Furthermore, both 5-HTP (which turns into serotonin) and magnesium influence neurotransmitters that regulate relaxation, leading to a combined (additive) effect on the central nervous system.

It is generally best to space these two supplements apart by at least 2 hours to ensure you get the full benefit of the 5-HTP. If you feel unusually sleepy or dizzy, reduce your dose and speak with a healthcare professional. Always consult your doctor before starting new supplements, especially if you are taking prescribed antidepressants.
