There is no known direct interaction between amoxicillin and sertraline. It is generally considered safe to take these two medications together.
It is generally considered safe to take amoxicillin and sertraline together.
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic cleared by the kidneys, while sertraline is an antidepressant processed by the liver. They do not interfere with each other's absorption, metabolism, or effects on the body.
How to take amoxicillin and sertraline safely
Take both medications as prescribed by your doctor.
Be aware that both medications can sometimes cause side effects such as diarrhoea or an upset stomach.
If you experience severe diarrhoea while taking the antibiotic, contact your GP.
Important precautions
Depression and anxiety disorders
You may experience an increase in suicidal thoughts or the urge to self-harm when first starting sertraline or changing the dose. This is more common in young adults under 25. Contact your doctor or go to hospital immediately if you notice any changes in your mood or behaviour.
Penicillin allergy
Do not take amoxicillin if you have ever had an immediate allergic reaction (such as a rash, swelling, or breathing difficulties) to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, as this can cause a life-threatening reaction.
Serotonin syndrome risk
Do not take sertraline if you are taking, or have taken in the last 14 days, an MAOI antidepressant (such as phenelzine or selegiline), as this can cause a dangerous and potentially fatal rise in serotonin levels.
Increased bleeding risk
Be aware that sertraline increases your risk of internal bleeding, especially if you also take aspirin, ibuprofen, or blood-thinning medications like warfarin.
Food and drink warnings
Alcohol
It is best to avoid drinking alcohol while taking sertraline. Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of the medicine, making you feel more sleepy, dizzy, or uncoordinated.
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking amoxicillin. While there is no direct chemical interaction, alcohol can dehydrate you and interfere with your sleep, which may slow down your recovery from infection. Additionally, both alcohol and amoxicillin can cause stomach upset or nausea, and combining them may make these side effects worse.
Grapefruit juice
Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice. Grapefruit contains compounds that can increase the level of sertraline in your blood, which may increase the risk of side effects.
