Both Royal Sun (Agaricus blazei) and Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) mushrooms contain high levels of beta-glucans, which are substances that stimulate the immune system. Taking them together may cause your immune system to become overactive. Both mushrooms can lower blood sugar levels and thin the blood. Taking them together might increase the risk of your blood sugar dropping too low (hypoglycaemia) or make you bruise or bleed more easily.

Why this happens
These mushrooms have additive pharmacodynamic effects. They both act as 'immunomodulators', meaning they increase the activity of certain white blood cells. These also contain compounds called beta-glucans and other chemicals that can improve insulin sensitivity and inhibit platelets (the cells that help your blood clot). When combined, these effects can be additive.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is best to use caution when combining these two medicinal mushrooms. If you have an autoimmune condition (like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) or if you are taking blood-thinning medications (like warfarin or aspirin), you should speak to your doctor before taking them together. Stop using both at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery to prevent excessive bleeding. Monitor your blood sugar levels closely if you have diabetes, and watch for signs of easy bruising or bleeding.

Important precautions
Back to contentsBleeding disorders or surgery
These supplements may slow blood clotting and increase the risk of bleeding. You must stop taking these at least 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery. Use with caution if you are taking blood-thinning medications like warfarin or aspirin.
Diabetes
These supplements can lower blood sugar levels. If you are taking insulin or other diabetes medications, monitor your blood sugar closely as your dose may need adjustment to prevent hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar).
Auto-immune conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
These supplements can increase immune system activity, which may worsen the symptoms of autoimmune diseases. Avoid use if you have these conditions.
Shiitake dermatitis
Eating raw or undercooked shiitake can cause a severe, itchy skin rash (flagellate dermatitis) that looks like whip marks. Ensure mushrooms are thoroughly cooked.
Food and drink warnings
Back to contentsAlcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking medicinal mushrooms. Both alcohol and certain compounds in these mushrooms are processed by the liver; combining them may increase the strain on your liver or alter how the supplements are metabolised.
General Food Intake
These medicinal mushrooms contain complex polysaccharides (beta-glucans). For the best absorption, it is often recommended to take them on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before a meal, or with a small amount of Vitamin C (such as a small glass of orange juice) which may help the body absorb the active compounds.
