Can I take Tetracycline and Calcium together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking calcium at the same time as tetracycline can stop the antibiotic from working properly. This is because the calcium binds to the medicine in your stomach, preventing your body from absorbing it into your bloodstream to fight your infection.

Why this happens

This is a pharmacokinetic interaction involving absorption. Calcium is a multivalent cation that undergoes 'chelation' with tetracycline. They bind together to form an insoluble complex in the digestive tract that is too large to pass through the gut wall.

What you should do

Do not take calcium supplements, antacids, or eat large amounts of dairy (like milk or yoghurt) at the same time as your tetracycline. You should separate the doses by at least 2 to 3 hours. For example, take your tetracycline 2 hours before or 3 hours after any calcium-containing products.

Important precautions

Interaction between tetracycline and calcium

Do not take calcium supplements at the same time as tetracycline. Calcium binds to the antibiotic, preventing your body from absorbing it. Space them at least 2 to 3 hours apart.

Pregnancy and childhood (under 12 years)

Tetracycline must not be used during pregnancy or in children under 12. It can cause permanent discolouration of the teeth and affect the bone development of the developing baby or child.

Sun sensitivity (Photosensitivity)

Tetracycline makes your skin much more sensitive to sunlight. You may burn severely even with short exposure; use high-factor sun cream and avoid sunbeds.

Food and drink warnings

Dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt)

Dairy products contain calcium, which binds to tetracycline in the gut. This prevents the medicine from being absorbed into your bloodstream, making the antibiotic much less effective. Avoid dairy for 2 hours before and after taking your dose.

Calcium-fortified foods (e.g., some orange juices or cereals)

Just like dairy, foods with added calcium can stop tetracycline from working properly. Do not consume these at the same time as your medication.

Iron-rich foods or supplements

Iron can interfere with the absorption of tetracycline. It is best to take this medicine on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.

Foods high in oxalic acid (spinach, rhubarb, beetroot)

Oxalic acid binds with calcium and can prevent it from being absorbed by your body. If you eat large amounts of these foods, it may reduce the effectiveness of your calcium supplement.

Caffeine (coffee, tea, cola)

Large amounts of caffeine can slightly increase the amount of calcium your body loses through urine and reduce absorption. Limit caffeine intake to moderate levels.
