MindEd provides free mental health e-learning for anyone who works or volunteers with children, teenagers or young people. The MindEd programme includes free online CAMHS training, counselling courses and mental health resources for teachers and health professionals.
This session covers sleep difficulties in children such as night terrors, confusional arousals. It offers advice on a healthy bedtime routine and provides information on what normal sleep means, as well as the range of different sleep disorders that may occur in children and teenagers.
- There is wide variation in the amount of sleep that children seem to need. Whether a child is above or below the average is not important as long as they are within the average range and performing well during the day.
- Adequate sleep quantity and quality is crucial for growth, learning, and behavioural development.
- Many sleep problems can be solved by attention to appropriate bedtime routines.
- Children may experience confusional arousals or night terrors.
- Physical sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea are common in school age children and can affect sleep quality and quantity
- Children in certain vulnerable groups including those with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning difficulties are very much more likely to have sleep difficulties
