This session covers sleep difficulties in children such as night terrors, confusional arousals. It offers advice on a healthy bedtime routine and provides information on what normal sleep means, as well as the range of different sleep disorders that may occur in children and teenagers.

  • There is wide variation in the amount of sleep that children seem to need. Whether a child is above or below the average is not important as long as they are within the average range and performing well during the day.
  • Adequate sleep quantity and quality is crucial for growth, learning, and behavioural development.
  • Many sleep problems can be solved by attention to appropriate bedtime routines.
  • Children may experience confusional arousals or night terrors.
  • Physical sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea are common in school age children and can affect sleep quality and quantity
  • Children in certain vulnerable groups including those with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning difficulties are very much more likely to have sleep difficulties
